Continuing on in our series, Waiting on the World to Change, our church studied what it meant to do in the area of “Practical Service” today.
When it comes to mission work, I think the church (universal) has always fallen on one of two ends of the spectrum (this is the case in almost everything Christian it seems). One one end, some people preach a spoken message to people neglecting glaring needs in front of their eyes. The other end finds mission trips utilizing Christians to serve people practically without ever saying why they are serving. They give out bottles of water to people in the name of Jesus but never actually say the name, “Jesus.”
There must be another way.
There was.
It is interesting how many times Jesus practically served people before he dealt with their spiritual needs. He would feed people, heal their disease, or help them in some tangible way. Jesus never had a problem helping others out.
But he always got around to ministering to them spiritually. He never neglected the greater need.
That’s what we are called to do. I was so thankful that Carl Burrell could also bring us that unbelievable testimony from the Gideons ministry. Carrie Christie’s story was unbelievable!
