Bad Church Sign of the Week: Changing Churches

This week’s bad church sign of the week states:

“CHANGING CHURCHES? – DOES IT MATTER WHICH ONE YOU STAY HOME FROM?”

I wonder if someone is a little bitter about attendance numbers.  While I am not a big fan of transfer growth (the type where people hop from church to church), it does happen.  Legitimate transfer growth is when someone has honestly prayed about the move and cannot fully support the overall direction of their current church.  Preference based hopping is not a good thing.

This sign tells an outside community that this church’s leadership shows indignation towards people without perfect attendance records.  While I believe attendance to church is vital, showing a sign like this isn’t going to boost numbers if that is the win.

  1. You said, “Legitimate transfer growth is when someone has honestly prayed about the move and cannot fully support the overall direction of their current church.” However, I am not sure if even that is legitimate. What if “the overall direction of their current church” is solid and biblical and people still bail? I believe legitimate transfer growth centers around heresy. Simply, why should anyone leave their church? Under what conditions is it right for a member to leave? Is moral sin in the church a valid reason? Is moral sin among the leadership a valid reason? Where in the NT is there a valid reason given for leaving a church? Valid reasons are given for divorce, so are any given for church departure? It appears as though the NT assumes that this is not the case; however, they didn’t have churches on every street corner or block (like Starbucks in Seattle or Dunkin’ Donuts in Boston like churches in the Southern U.S.) either.

    • Good thought, T-Money. It’s a tough one. Is failed orthodoxy a valid reason to live? Doesn’t failed orthodoxy not lead to failed orthopraxy?

I think I could stick it out with a church through a lot. But I would have a hard time leading my family to stick it out for five years in a place that the people were majoring on the minors when I could be a part of another section of the Body of Christ that was being Jesus’ hands and feet on this earth.

Hard call. One I hope I never have to make.
