Sow Your Wild Oats

Gen 2:21-22
21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. 22 Then the LORD God made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.

You’ve heard the expression, “they are connected at the hip.” It is used to describe two inseparable people who desire to be together more than they desire to be alone. When two people enjoy being together so much, they simply like to share most events in life together. They are connected at the hip.

The only thing more enduring than being connected at the hip is being “connected at the rib.” When God made Eve, he didn’t make her like he had made Adam. Adam was made out of the dust of the earth that God had created. Eve was made from the man that God created. There was a deep connection intended right from the beginning. Eve’s very own creation was tied up in begin connected to her future husband.

While you might believe the reality of that historical event (I do), many people scoff at the implying significance of that verse – that two individuals married become one.

In our day and time, independence and self-reliance are staples of adulthood. Marriage is entered into with strict stipulations placed upon maintaining one’s own freedom. The norm is for husbands and wives to maintain their own schedules, bank accounts, and recreation.

Why is it that we feel like becoming one with someone takes anything away from our own individuality? Our culture is marrying later and later in an effort to “sow our wild oats.” The concept is to live it up before you get tied down. Go see the world, save money, and enjoy the world before getting married, because once you are married, all that goes away.

As Christians, we must rebel against that notion. If you want to see the world, go and see it with the one you love. Enjoy life together. Bring your individuality to the table, but see what God could do by being connected at the hip.
