What Submission Doesn’t Mean

…submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.

Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is head of the wife as also Christ is head of the church. He is the Savior of the body. Now as the church submits to Christ, so wives should [submit] to their husbands in everything.  –(Eph 5:21-24, HCSB)

Submission has nothing to do with inferiority. Submission has everything to do with significance.

Ladies, if you haven’t noticed, the men in your life have ego problems. They like to be first. They love to be the best at something. Everything in the world is all right when someone compliments them.

Some of that can turn unhealthy, but some of that is due to how God made men. God made men to desire significance. Men will go looking for significance in a woman, a job, a hobby, or some other place. No matter how they find significance, rest assured, they will look for it.

So is it that bad that they find it in their spouse? Submission implies showing respect. A submissive wife encourages her husband, loves to listen to her husband, and takes delight in his leadership. If a husband finds significance in his wife, he doesn’t have to look for it anywhere else.

Oftentimes, women look at this passage for what it means to them and not what it means to their husbands. This passage’s focus is not to take away anything from women, but it is an invitation to women from God to partner with Him to build significance in their husbands.

Don’t worry, ladies, the next verses will get to men’s responsibilities, but today, focus on how you could lovingly submit to your husband. It might be as simple as asking him for his preference on tonight’s restaurant. You could do it by encouraging him for the things that he does for the home that often go unnoticed. You might be surprised at the man your husband could become if all of his needed significance he found in you and in Jesus.

  3. a difficult concept until one realizes that Jesus did it first, supremely. MY will is not most important, nor is my husband's. It will undoubtedly become less of a test when he becomes a follower of Chris
