A Husband’s Job

Husbands, love your wives, just as also Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her, to make her holy, cleansing her in the washing of water by the word. He did this to present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hates his own flesh, but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, since we are members of His body.  –Eph 5:25-30 (HCSB)

Men, did you know that nowhere in the Bible does it command wives to love their husbands? However, repeatedly through Scripture God reminds husbands to love their wives. Before you get bent out of shape thinking there is some type of divine feminist agenda trying to oppress the male society, think about the underlying significance.

God doesn’t have to tell wives to love their husbands because most of them naturally do so. Women love to love. They love people, children, pretty scenery, and life in general. They naturally choose to give themselves away to the needs of others. Women are loving people.

Guys, on the other hand, sometimes fall short in the love department. Men’s natural inclination is to provide while sometimes lacking in intentional affection. Men often appreciate a person but fail to tell him or her.

God didn’t have to tell women to love their husbands because He knew that most of them would just naturally do that. He did see it a need to tell husbands to love their wives because it isn’t as natural. Men, today love your wives. Love them the way that Christ loved the church. Give yourself away for her. Sacrifice for her. Be willing to die for her. Treasure her above all else.

Even if the feelings aren’t there today, choose to love her like Jesus. Christ didn’t feel like going to the cross. He asked if there was another way, but He still went to it with joy (Heb. 12:2). Joy is different than feelings. Even if the feelings you once had for your wife are not present today, choose to go to the cross for her. Lay yourself down and love her like a real man. Love her like Jesus.

By letting them know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they (the wives) are still the most beautiful woman in the world in their eyes, whether she's 25 or 95…Can I copy and print this to read at the end of the "From This Day Forward" lesson this Sunday? I think this would be an excellent way to close this unit of lessons you wrote…VERY good lessons, by the
