Overcome – Storytellers

As the songs for the next recording project came together, it was evident that God had brought about a theme.  All the songs that were coming together had to do with the fact that life is hard, but we will make it.  As I started to put the songs all on paper, I realized there wasn’t a big opener anthem.  We needed a song to summarize all of them.

That’s where this song came in.  As I studied Scripture for what still needed to be said, there were two passages that unified the whole project for me:

You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. -1 John 4:4

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying,
“Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night.
11 “And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. -Revelation 12:10-11

It just so happened, that both of them had a key word in their promises – overcome.  I love it when God pulls something together like that!

I took those two passages and crafted the chorus around those themes: “We will overcome, we will overcome, greater is the One who lives in us. We will overcome, we will overcome, the battle is won in You, Jesus.”

With the song verses, I expanded those passages.  For the bridge, I included one of my favorite passages in Psalm 30:5, 11: “Sorrow may last for the night, but joy rises with the morning light, You’ve turned our mourning into dancing.”

I wanted a lady to sing it so it could just take it over the top, and Jodie’s voice fit the song perfectly.  When you sing it, you have to apply the bridge though – get to dancing!

We will overcome – hope you enjoy the snippet:
