“It’s You” & “Selah #3” – Storytellers

“If there’s one thing I can’t get over, it’s You.”

I wanted to share another story behind the song from one of the tracks off of our “Enter His Gates” album (You can get your copy of the album at the church or on iTunes).  Track 13-14 is the “It’s You” suite.

This song was originally written for our “Submerge” student camp years ago.  An in-house band, “Brannon,” recorded this song on an EP.  We never used it with the church as a whole, but with much of the teaching we have been focused upon in John, I felt like we needed to bring it back.

The song was basically written as a commitment to the sufficiency of Christ in a prosperity-focused American Christianity.  So much of people’s faith nowadays is based upon Jesus plus something else.  While Christ blesses us in so many ways, if all of them were taken away, we would still have more than what we deserve.

As we reworked it, Tracey’s voice was perfect for the vibe of the song.  The picture above was our release concert outdoors where we weren’t sure if she was going to make it because her baby was due within days.  We were glad to have her there that night.

We were also glad to have her able to record it.  We had recorded the track in G, but as her baby was filling up her breathing space, she asked if we could take it down.  Sure, we could.  But we had recorded a bunch in G.  But when I tried it out with her about 5 bpm’s slower and a whole step down to F, it turned into something very special.  This song has meant so much to many people.  I can’t begin to tell you the stories I have heard about how this song has ministered to people in unique ways and led people in worship in unique settings.

“Selah #3” takes off at the end of the track with a piano composition by Woody.  The song was beautiful, and then we thought of it reprising the melody from “Enter His Gates” from track 2.  Adding that part and Leah’s beautiful flute has made it my most-listened to track of the entire project.
