Church Sign: Santa Is Satan

Wow.  I wonder if someone is on the “naughty list.”  This church sign reads:

SANTA IS SATAN

I know people have different convictions concerning whether you should celebrate Santa or not, but I know of one preacher who is convinced of his view.

The sign has upset community members because they are worried it will ruin Christmas for children.

I’m sure it is definitely the talk of the town.  Here’s a news article that comes from WJBF:

Harlem, GA – ‘Santa is Satan’ posted in bold letters outside of a small church in Harlem, GA. Pastor Edwards Carothers of Born Again Baptist Church says he stands by his message.

Pastor Carothers put the sign out weeks ago and he says, he’s surprised by all of the negative attention its received.

He wants people to stop focusing on Santa Claus and start remembering the true meaning of Christmas.

“I preach the truth and the word of God, and I stay with the bible, but at this time of the year it gets real bothersome to me to see a false deity being lifted up in the face of Jesus Christ,” Pastor Carothers explained.

The Pastor says Satan created Santa in order to draw people away from Jesus. He gave a handout to everyone in his congregation on Sunday morning stating how Santa Claus has stolen Jesus’s identity.

“Santa has been given the attributes of Jesus Christ in the handout I gave you, it explains why Satan of course, would use a deity to imitate the very son of God,” The Pastor said.

I asked him, is it a sin to believe in Jesus Christ. He responded by explaining, that it’s a sin to lie, and so it’s a sin to tell your children about a fictitious character, such as Santa.

Born Again Baptist Church has been compared to Westboro Baptist Church. Pastor Carothers says, that is not true, he is only teaching what the Bible says.

“We are getting to the point where Santa Claus is on every street corner, but you can’t put out a manger scene out,” he continued.

Pastor Carothers ended his interview by saying he is a loving Pastor, not a dictator. He says, he only wants people to understand the true reason for the season.

After a lot of attention last week, they updated their sign to a longer message.

SANTA+CHURCH+SIGN

If you go to the website, you find an article that has a theory about Santa being the great imposter and is actually Satan himself.

In the very lengthy article, the writer has many theories of how these two beings are actually the same person.

The Devil is a master of disguise. He can make it appear good, pleasant, and seemingly so innocent – and yet it is deadly! The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 11:14, “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” He does not appear with horns and a pitch fork breathing fire. He might just appear as a pleasant, friendly, fellow, with “a broad face and a round little belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. . .”

Could Santa Claus be a subtle, clever attack on our children to confuse, doubt and rob their God-ordained “child like” faith? Satan knows, if he can somehow get that child through those fruitful early years without trusting the Lord Jesus Christ – his goal of eternal damnation in hell increases substantially.

We live in interesting times, don’t we?  Church signs, you never fail to disappoint.  Merry Christmas, everybody.

  1. What about people who are drawn to Christmas by Santa and find Jesus? If a child can believe in Santa, he will have no problem having faith in a true God. Train up a child in the way he should go. Thanks Travis!!

  2. Though I don’t agree with the decision to place this message on a church sign, and if you read the article, I do agree that the secular world has overly commercialized the Christmas we all(believers/unbelievers) celebrate. This just was not the way to counteract that misdirection. Love is the command He gives us.

  3. I’ve also seen it work in the opposite direction. Once a child is told that Santa isn’t real, they can infer that God must not be real. The reasoning is something like this. Santa is invisble and is not real. God is invisible, he must not be real either.
