He FORGIVES Our Sin and REMOVES Our Guilt

Don’t let Leviticus scare you away!

While this book can be hard to read with its long lists and gory details, it is a picture of all that Christ fulfilled with his sacrifice.  As you read the pages, be amazed at what Jesus accomplished once and for all through his death.

Here are some notes on the sin offering and the guilt offering.

  1. The sin offering was a way to deal with the sin of omission, happenstance, and impulsiveness (Lev. 5:1-6).
  2. Something must be done about our uncleanness if we are to enter the presence of God.
  3. Due to the seriousness of sin, even unintentional sin must be dealt with.
  4. The opportunity to approach God is not restricted for the rich (Lev. 5:7).
  5. “Atonement” means to cover – God no longer sees the sin!
  6. The guilt offering is God’s answer to “let me make it up to you” (Lev. 5:14-16).
  7. God required a 20% restitution to make things right (Lev. 5:16).  It reminds us of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:8-9).
  8. Awareness implies accountability (Lev. 5:17).
  9. God cleanses all sin and all guilt (Lev. 5:19).
  10. The scapegoat was to signify the removal of sin from the people (Lev. 16:20-22).
  11. Christ not only FORGIVES our sin, but he REMOVES our guilt!
  12. Due to the marring of sin, the sacrifice must be outside the camp (Lev. 16:27; Heb. 13:11-12).
  13. All believers must go out to Christ at the place of reproach and rejection.

The sin offering was taken outside the camp and burned completely (Lev. 16:27).  Jesus Christ, our perfect sin offering, suffered and died “outside the gate” of Jerusalem.  All true Christians must go out to Him, spiritually speaking, to the place of reproach and rejection.  -Warren Wiersbe
