Weekly Wisdom [01.05.18]

Need some Weekly Wisdom?  Here are my favorite resources of the week.

I am going to try something different this year in sharing weekly resources that impacted me.  Last year, I read 1 book per week and would post my favorite quotes from each volume here on the blog, but I also have been benefiting so much from other types of resources.

At the end of each week, I want to give you a short list of the things that have been stirring my heart and challenging my head.  As a pastor, my job is to equip saints for the work of ministry (Eph. 4:12).

I want to see if this list of 7 favorites from each week (verse, book, podcast, quote, post, song, and tip) could possibly help you.

So, here is the first list!

Verse of the Week

How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?  How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? -Proverbs 1:22

Book of the Week

Discipling by Mark Dever

Before ascending to heaven, Jesus instructed his followers to “make disciples of all nations.” But what does this command actually entail? What does it look like for Christians to care for one another’s spiritual well-being and growth? In this introduction to the basics of discipling, veteran pastor and author Mark Dever uses biblical definitions and practical examples to show how Christians can help one another become more like Christ every day.

Favorite Quotes:

    1. That’s the working definition of discipling for this book: helping others to follow Jesus…Another way we could define discipling might be: discipling is deliberately doing spiritual good to someone so that he or she will be more like Christ (13).
    2. Have you ever heard of the life→ truth→ life pattern?  Your life should attract people to listen to you; your teaching should then work for their transformation; their transformed lives should then illustrate what you taught, which in turn attracts people to listen to them (84).
    3. I want to promote and equip men who look like they can help to advance Christianity into the place I’ll never go: the future beyond my passing (95).

Podcast of the Week

Mark Driscoll’s Interview with R.C. Sproul

Theologian R.C. Sproul has recently passed away. Many years ago, I had the honor of sitting down to interview him about theology, his beloved wife, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the fact that he’d never been on the Internet, seen Facebook, or sent an email. We dug up the old interview and hope you enjoy it.

Quote of the Week

Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can. -John Wesley

Post of the Week

Chuck Lawless’ “10 Surprise Goals to Set for 2018.”

You’ve probably set some goals for this new year, and I assume that some are related to your spiritual walk. Whatever your goals are, I encourage you to think about adding these goals to your list as well.  They may surprise you, but they reflect challenges I’ve seen too many believers face.

Song of the Week

I Don’t Feel Noways Tired – Rev. James Cleveland.  Wonderful, old spiritual sung by a gospel music icon.

“I don’t believe He brought me this far to leave me.”

Tip of the Week

Get your email inbox to zero this week.

We waste so much time looking at the same email without doing something with it, and the ever-increasing stack of emails is suffocating you.  Put some folders together on the side, and then delete, archive, file, or answer everything and try to get your email to zero in one week from now.  Then try to make that a weekly goal.  Important discipline, huge results.
