Attributes of God [Fall 2018 Equip Study]

A. W. Tozer was a brilliant theologian and pastor of the twentieth century. In his book, The Knowledge of the Holy, he presented a thesis statement that signifies the importance of addressing the issue of theology. He wrote:

“What comes to your mind when you think about God is the most important thing about you.”

On the first read, that statement may seem a bit dramatic, but is he on to something here?

  • If someone thinks that God is a lighting-bolt throwing angry titan in the sky, that person will carefully calculate how he or she lives his or her life.
  • If someone thinks God could care less about the chaotic condition of this planet, that person will probably not seek God for help amidst growing concerns.
  • If someone thinks that God does not exist, the only accountability that a person can have is himself or herself.

What comes to your mind when you think about God might be the most important thing about you.

If Tozer is correct with the thought that our theological beliefs have the power to change every element of our lives, it is of utmost importance to make sure that our views are correct and unwavering. If what comes to my mind when I think about God is the most important thing about me, then I better ensure that what comes to my mind when I think about God is actually correct.

I desperately need truth. If truth exists, it is far superior and more enduring than my flighty opinion. What God says about God is far more dependable than what I say about God.

EQUIP COURSE – ATTRIBUTES OF GOD

The issue of having a correct theology is critically important.  That’s why I am teaching a course on the Attributes of God.  During our Fall 2018 semester of Equip, we will be looking at a different attribute of God every week.  Attributes of God are the foundational beliefs about who God is and what he is like that comes from Scripture.

You can’t worship a God fully if you only know Him partially.

If you would like to know more about who God is and what He does, join us on Sundays nights at 6 PM in the Fellowship Hall.  We begin August 26, 2018 by discussing the Immanence of God (God is present – He is near!).

Each week’s attribute will correspond with the Sunday sermon through the Gospel of Mark.
