Commandments & Compromises

God gave this first couple one commandment, and they quickly made compromises in order to break it. In all marriages, we are called to help each other fulfill God’s Word over meet our expectations.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate (Genesis 3:6).

The God Who Is for You

God gave Adam and Eve His Word because He cared for them. The greatest gift He could give them was a consistent reminder that they were not in charge.

Offering the Word

When God gives us the Word, it is because He wants us to experience His best in our lives.

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17).

A couple should have a confident grasp regarding the expectations of God on their marriage.

Obeying the Word

The point of receiving biblical information is to accomplish biblical application.

The gift of marriage is experiencing accountability to keep God’s ways.

The Enemy Who Is Against You

Doubting the Word

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1).

Satan’s goal is to incite suspicion within you regarding God’s instruction.

Disobeying the Word

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate (Genesis 3:6).

What you view becomes what you desire which becomes what you take.

Sin always involves us thinking we know better than God.

The Spouse Who Is Beside You

Reframing the Word

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” (Genesis 3:2-3).

The more we question the validity of God’s Word, the further we will exaggerate the reality of its claims.

Repositioning the Word

And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree

of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life (Genesis 3:17).

God didn’t have a problem with Adam listening to his wife’s voice, but prioritizing that voice over His was the couple’s downfall.

Prioritize God’s Word even over your spouse’s wishes.
