The Legacy of the Righteous

If I think of a goal of parenthood, Psalm 112 sums it up perfectly:

Hallelujah!  Happy is the man who fears the LORD, taking great delight in His commands.

His descendants will be powerful in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.

This psalm explains the goal of a multigenerational legacy.  God desires that parents will fear the LORD in every way.  They will not only obey His commands, but they will enjoy doing so because His commands are not burdensome (1 John 5:3).

For the parent that accomplishes this, the desire is that his or her children will live mighty lives marked distinctly by holiness.

This destiny will not happen by accident.

And it will not happen by solely your efforts.  God is inviting you into a partnership to teach your children concerning the way they should go.  The hope is that when your children become old, they refuse to turn away from this path (Prov. 22:6).

It is time to wake up.  Your children are getting older every day.

Did you know that approximately 6,575 days pass between a child’s birth and his or her eighteenth birthday?  While parenting does not end for a child at age 18, it marks the passing of a pivotal time of parenting and molding.

While you will be their parents forever, the pivotal time to shape them grows lesser by the day.  It’s just a reminder for me and hopefully today: are you parenting with a godly legacy in mind?
