You Really Do Have Enough Time to Read the Bible

As believers, we need to dedicate ourselves to the study of the Bible.

When I actually started studying and memorizing Scripture in college, everything changed.  One of the most foundational verses of Scripture for me was Joshua 1:8:

This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.

Studying God’s Word is more than a 5-minute quiet time exercise that doesn’t permeate any other moment in my day.  The goal is that the Word would not leave my lips because I speak it so much.  How can I speak it?  Because I meditate on it day and night.  It’s more than just thinking about it. I think about it so that I can do it or apply it.  And when I do that, my way will be prosperous and I will have great success.

I often hear people say that they want to read the Bible but they just don’t have enough time.

I don’t doubt that you are busy, but I do doubt if you are actually too busy to read the Bible.

I think there is always some time that we waste.  We need to redeem the time from these evil days (Eph. 5:16).

Stop prioritizing your schedule and start scheduling your priorities.

  • Find a good Bible reading plan.
  • Find some verses to memorize so that you have them throughout the day.
  • Set your alarm.  It will actually wake you up.  It’s amazing.
  • If you hit snooze too much on your alarm, move your alarm clock at least ten steps away from your bed forcing you to get up.
  • If your tendency is to wake up and browse through your favorite app, set the Bible app as what is running on your phone, close it, and go to sleep.  When you wake up, you will face God’s Word before all that other stuff.
  • Find some accountability.

Realize this: if you don’t read God’s Word today, he is not the one missing out – you are.

God is not in Heaven whining about the fact that you haven’t read the Bible today.  He is not needy.  He is not lonely.  He is not dependent upon your obedience.

You will significantly miss out on living in truth if you don’t read God’s Word today.  It’s simple.  Get into the Bible.

No, seriously, stop reading this article and pick up your Bible.
