The Will of God

What a special day to worship Jesus.  What a fantastic time with our church family committing ourselves to submitting ourselves to the will of God.

I led worship today but in a different way.  I wasn’t in the band, but I led people to focus upon God by introducing the focus for the day.

I wasn’t in the band for a few reasons:

  1. I am going around and evaluating many of our family ministry programming right now.
  2. Obadiah’s birthday was Wednesday and I didn’t want to miss celebrating with him for band practice.
  3. The band is so full of great leaders, they always do such a great job with or without me!

As I studied James 4:13-17 as I worked on the service, I wanted to lead our church family to commit ourselves to trust God’s will and to submit to God’s will.

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” 14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil.17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Here was the order for the service today:

  • Song – “Lay Me Down”
  • Welcome & Introduction – Travis talks about the will of God and leads through time of confession and prayer.
  • Reading – Proverbs 3:5-6
  • Song – Sing bridge of “Lay Me Down” 2 times
  • Song – “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms/Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”
  • Song – “Oceans” – sing bridge twice
  • Family Dedication
  • Prayer time over families
  • Take offering
  • Song – “Come Holy Spirit”
  • Message – The Will of God
  • Song – “Have Thine Own Way”
  • Prayer of Blessing

I was so thankful for the sermon today.  When Jeff blew out that match, it was such a great visual reminder about the shortness of our lives.  Some of my favorite thoughts from the service:

  • My decisions are often separated by one option that builds God’s Kingdom and one option that builds my kingdom.
  • How presumptuous to think that I will live long enough to see all my plans come to pass!
  • Arrogant parenting teaches children they can do whatever they want. That leads to self-centered individualism.
  • You can make plans and goals, but make them acknowledging they will come to pass if the Lord wills it to happen.
