Matthew 26:17-30
As we remember the sacrifice of Jesus, never forget that God is able to pass over our sins because Jesus was the perfect substitute.
- Perfect Substitute – The lamb must be without blemish (Ex. 12:5; cf. Heb. 9:14). How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
- Unbroken Bones – The lamb’s bones must not be broken (Ex. 12:46; cf. John 19:33, 36). But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs…For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”
- Consumed Sacrifice – The entire lamb must not be consumed (Ex. 12:8-10; cf. John 6:53). So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
- Applied Blood – The blood must be applied on the door with a hyssop branch for protection from God’s wrath (Ex. 12:7, 22; cf. Heb. 9:12; John 19:29). He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.
