Passover

Matthew 26:17-30

As we remember the sacrifice of Jesus, never forget that God is able to pass over our sins because Jesus was the perfect substitute.

  1. Perfect Substitute – The lamb must be without blemish (Ex. 12:5; cf. Heb. 9:14).  How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
  2. Unbroken Bones – The lamb’s bones must not be broken (Ex. 12:46; cf. John 19:33, 36).  But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs…For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: â€œNot one of his bones will be broken.”
  3. Consumed Sacrifice – The entire lamb must not be consumed (Ex. 12:8-10; cf. John 6:53).  So Jesus said to them, â€œTruly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
  4. Applied Blood – The blood must be applied on the door with a hyssop branch for protection from God’s wrath (Ex. 12:7, 22; cf. Heb. 9:12; John 19:29).  He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.  A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.
