Apathy & Abortion

September 7, 2025

Abortion is not only a cultural and political debate but a biblical and theological issue. To ignore the vulnerable or remain apathetic toward the unborn is to deny God’s call to protect life made in His image.

God is the Creator of life and the One who calls children a gift and blessing. To take innocent life is to disregard His design and dismiss His sovereignty. Abortion, then, is not simply a political controversy — it is a direct affront to the God who forms every life with purpose.

The greater danger for the church is not only the practice of abortion in culture but the apathy within God’s people. When believers grow silent out of fear, weariness, or avoidance, the most vulnerable remain undefended. Silence in the face of injustice is not neutrality — it is complicity.

Yet the gospel calls us to more than opposition; it calls us to compassion. Many who choose abortion do so out of fear or pressure. The church must be a community of both truth and grace — where women find support rather than shame and where children are welcomed as blessings rather than burdens. In Christ, we are called not only to reject abortion but to embody a culture of life — to be a people who defend the voiceless, honor God’s image in every person, and reflect His heart for the weak and powerless.

1. Trends – What the Culture Is Teaching

  • Legal History Roe v. Wade (1973) legalized abortion; Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992) reaffirmed it; Dobbs v. Jackson (2022) overturned it, returning decisions to the states.
  • Numbers – Since 1973, more than 60 million abortions have occurred in the U.S., with hundreds of thousands annually.
  • Ethical Inconsistency – The law may call the death of an unborn child in a crime “homicide,” yet call abortion a “right.”
  • Rights and Exceptions – Culture frames abortion as central to women’s rights, often elevating rare cases of rape or incest as justification for broad legality.

2. Truths – What Scripture Says

  • God forms life in the wombJeremiah 1:5: “I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born.”
  • God knows every detail of life Psalm 139:13-14: “For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made.”
  • God defends the vulnerable Proverbs 31:8-9: “Speak up for those who have no voice… defend the cause of the oppressed and needy.”
  • God condemns shedding innocent blood Proverbs 6:16-17: “The Lord hates… hands that shed innocent blood.”
  • God’s people must not be silent Ezekiel 33:7-9: The watchman who fails to warn is held accountable for his silence.

3. Transfers – How to Communicate Truth to Others

  • Offer compassion, not condemnation – Many women are pressured or fearful. Christians must extend grace, forgiveness, and practical help.
  • Highlight the positive vision – We are not just “against abortion” but “for life, children, mothers, and families.”
  • Support the vulnerable – Encourage adoption, foster care, crisis pregnancy resources, and church ministries that provide tangible care.
  • Ask convicting questions – “If God forms life in the womb, what does that mean for how we treat the unborn?” “What would it look like to defend those who cannot defend themselves?”
