On a Hill Far Away

On a hill far away, stood an old rugged cross. Those iconic words compose the first line of a beloved hymn written by George Bennard in 1912. The words are powerful by themselves, but to know the story behind them takes the song to a deeper level. You see, George was converted by the gospel of Jesus Christ when he …

Jesus, Son of God

We sang “Jesus, Son of God” at tonight’s Gathering service.  I love this song from Chris Tomlin from sung at Passion a few years ago.  This song is a great example of using powerful, gospel-telling lyrics with music that accompanies the lyrics well. Lyrics VERSE 1 You came down from heaven’s throne This earth you formed was not your home …

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

To conclude our services on prayer today, we sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Joseph Scriven wrote this hymn in 1855 to comfort his mother, who was across the sea from him in Ireland. It was originally published anonymously, and Scriven did not receive full credit for almost 30 years. I have always loved the words of this hymn. …

Managing Ministry Interruptions

A few days ago, I posted an article entitled “Death to the Green Room” which somehow got traction in certain circles.  It caused a surprisingly large amount of people to read the post and prompted some discussion.  What was intended to be an article teaching our church about what we value as a worship team, it caused some to evaluate their own …

Amazed [Storytellers]

“Amazed” was written for “The Word” project to cover the time covering Jesus’ ministry. “The Word” is a project by North Side Worship telling the grand narrative of the Bible.  It is available at North Side (May 3, 2015) and iTunes (May 5, 2015). While the three years of Christ’s ministry was relatively short in relation to the scope of the entire biblical narrative, those years changed …

If Jesus Thought It Was Important to Pray This Much…

I prayed that God would grow me in my prayer life this year.  I had no clue how he was going to answer it, but I have sat in amazement at what he has done.  Through emphases at the church, the opportunity to help develop a Bible study curriculum on prayer, and my time in Scripture, Jesus has been teaching me …

Jesus Is My Prozac

This church sign is all types of interesting: JESUS IS MY PROZAC This church sign means all types of meanings to all types of different people. Some will laugh, some agree, and some will even be offended.  Always think about what your outside message says to those on the outside.

Jesus, Who?

“Knock knock.
Who’s there?
Jesus.
Jesus, who?
Exactly.”
I can’t even make this stuff up.

Did Jesus Really Say That?

I have this desire to help educate people concerning what Jesus actually said while he was on earth. That brings us to the following quiz. Read the following statements without the help of a Bible and decide whether or not Jesus actually said them.  The answers will be below. Let the dead bury their own dead. Anyone who says, “You fool!” …

Why Are There 4 Gospels?

The New Testament begins with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These four books, commonly called “the Gospels” serve as biographies on the life and ministry of Jesus. In New Testament study, the word “gospel” is used frequently. It means “good news.” When speaking of the message of the gospel, it will most often be written with a lowercase “g.” When …

I must admit: I don’t necessarily disagree entirely with the theology on this one. I don’t think you “try Jesus,” but I do have to admit that life is pretty cray cray. And I do believe Jesus is the way…way.

In the American culture, it is increasingly more difficult to keep children focused on Jesus during Easter and Christmas.  When bunnies, eggs, candy, gifts, reindeer, and a fat man sliding down your chimney is thrown at them at all times, it is a challenge to reorient their thinking to the things of God.  You don’t want it to become, “Let’s get …

I got to watch the “Knowing Jesus” DVD with our band and tech team tonight at the house. It was a great time watching these people worship along to these biblical truths. 16 months ago we met in our house to begin writing these songs, and here we sat together as a family celebrating what God has done among us.

I am blown away at how well this came together. God blessed us with some special people on our team and outside our team to put together an incredible double disc CD and DVD. It sings the Bible. You can feel the passion in the room. It’s very special.

We will have each available on Sunday for $15. Get both for $25. Get some for a friend. Share the gospel in a unique way.

Tonight, I am truly humbled that these wonderful worship leaders let me lead with them.

Here’s a sneak peek from the video – hope you enjoy:

1 John Recap

BIBLE 1John

A few months ago, we looked at the calendar and needed to plan how we were going to end the series on 1 John – “Knowing That You Know Jesus.”  I had this random idea.  I began to tell Jeff what I was thinking, and he said, “I was thinking the exact same thing.  Let’s go with it.”

So, anyway, that “go with it” happened this morning. It was powerful and unexpected.

We simply read through the Book of 1 John.  At the end of different sections, we worshiped according to the truth read.  It was so simple and powerful just letting the Word speak.  No commentary.  No need for explanation.  And we know it did not return void.

Gus Burgdorf did a great job sharing his work with the Gideon’s ministry.  The Word is powerful (getting the theme yet?).

Today, we worshiped to a lot of music:

Day 88 of M’Cheyne

I started the M’Cheyne Bible reading plan on January 1st of this year.  The goal is to read through the entire Bible once, the NT and Psalms twice.  At first I was unsure of the format, but I have grown to love this plan.

It is a simple format reading through 4 different of sections each day, and it is not geared around any holiday.  That’s why Day 88’s reading was so powerful.

It so “happenned” to be Good Friday.  It so “happenned” to be on the day we were starting our “Knowing Jesus” presentation.  It so “happenned” to be after a very rough dress rehearsal on Wednesday where everything you could possibly imagined that could have gone wrong did.

And I wake up that Friday morning and I pull out the day’s reading and I was overwhelmed by what I found:

Knowing Jesus Weekend Recap

In January of 2012, our worship team began studying Scripture and writing music to chronicle the life of Jesus.  During Easter weekend, we presented our King as passionately and skillfully as we were able.  Both Friday and Saturday night were full of visitors and worshipers.  Those who knew the story well and those who were being introduced to it for the first time.  People who had never walked into a church in their entire lives and people who were following along in their Bibles as we proclaimed the truth.

I am still trying to process everything that went down, but here’s what I know for sure:
