Book of the Week

Mentor by Chuck Lawless

Mentor Bible Study Book includes six small-group sessions, applicable Scripture, “How to Use This Study,” and tips for leading a group.  A vital component of a group member’s discipleship experience, this Bible Study Book includes optional personal-study activities that can be adapted to the individual’s specific needs or schedule.

“The disciple walks in the dust of the master.” This common expression from the first century summarizes the focus of this study. Discipleship is nonnegotiable in Scripture. And the best way to learn how to walk with God is to walk in the dust of a master who himself walks with God. The master must not walk so far ahead and the disciple so far behind that the master’s dust cannot fall on the student. Mentoring takes place as two or more people walk together. Using Jesus and Paul as examples, this study describes the biblical model of mentorship, provides a practical strategy for starting a mentoring relationship and process, addresses common challenges in mentoring, and more.

Favorite Quotes:

  1. Mentoring is a God-given relationship in which one growing Christian encourages and equips another believer to reach his or her potential as a disciple of Christ (10).
  2. The goal of Christian mentoring is that the mentor lives like Jesus, the disciples becomes more and more like Jesus, and both continue to lead others to do the same (14).
  3. Investing in others requires only that you’re one step ahead in some area – that you’ve learned something you can give to others (18).

Billy Graham’s Ministry in Four Words – J.D. Greear

Billy Graham, the most influential evangelist of our time, passed away earlier today at the age of 99. In the days to come, I look forward to reading accounts from the many people whose lives were transformed by Reverend Graham’s ministry. Personally, as I reflect on Billy Graham’s six decades of ministry, four words stand out:

Song of the Week

Love this fresh take on this old hymn.  Chelsea Moon with the Franz Brothers do an incredible rendition of “How Firm a Foundation.”

Tip of the Week

Get an accountability partner to help with a goal in your life.

Trying to make a change?  Start doing something?  Stop doing something?  You might be failing because you are trying to run by yourself.  You are less likely to neglect the gym if you have someone waiting there for you.

What’s you goal?  Get someone near in proximity and aligned with your desire to keep you accountable to where you want to go.
