Bad Church Sign of the Week: Bible Study with Scissors

You know this one is going to be a problem just by the title.

This week’s bad church sign states:

“Bible Study 7 PM

Bring Bible, Scissors”

Normally, at this point, I try to explain to you what the intended message probably was, but this week I have no clue.  They either are doing crafts or they are taking bits and pieces out of Scripture.

Even if that is not literally what is happening at this congregation, don’t plenty of people do that spiritually?  Don’t we select which portions of Scripture we want to read?

We love God’s promise of peace (Isa. 26:3), wisdom (Jam. 1:5), prosperity (John 10:10), and all that good stuff.

But we don’t like His commands concerning holiness (Matt. 5:48), devotion (Luke 6:46-47), suffering (2 Tim. 3:12), and other promised elements of Scripture.

Just a word of encouragement today: don’t bring your spiritual scissors to God’s Word.  He put it together as one book.  In it, you will find more completeness that you can imagine.  Read it.  Devour it.  Mediate upon it.  And then most importantly, obey it (Jas. 1:22).
