Bad Church Sign of the Week: You Won't Be Too Busy to Die

This week’s bad church sign states:

“YOU WON’T BE TOO BUSY TO DIE.”

While this church is trying to coax passerbys into coming to church now, I don’t know if this is the right message to send. I agree with this church that church attendance is helpful to one’s spiritual well-being. If people think they are too busy to come to church, I would encourage them to come as well as this church would. We always make time for the things that are important to us.

But joking about one’s eternal separation from God is not funny – it’s crass. Any church sign that jokes about someone dying and going to hell is not only rude, it is against the teachings of God Himself. Listen to God’s words:

Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?’ – Ezekiel 33:11

While I agree with this message that everyone will die and we need to be aware of that fact, churches – you must be careful how you speak of souls. Sarcasm rarely leads anyone to faith in Christ.
