“All Things New” & “Selah #1” – Storytellers

I wanted to share another story behind the song from one of the tracks off of our “Enter His Gates” album (You can get your copy of the album at the church or on iTunes).  This storyteller edition covers the remix of “All Things New” and the next track that is an instrumental reprise of that track.

We originally recorded this song on “The Time is Now” project.  I never really imagined that for a upbeat song, many people told me how the words impacted their lives as it focuses on the grace of Jesus.  As a way to re-introduce the song, our band reworked it one night.

Here’s what we changed:

We changed it from major to minor with a piano lead.  We also dropped the key from C to G so that it would be easier to sing for the majority of people and also allow room for a lady to lead it.  Richenda came up with some wonderful ideas to breathe life into this song.  A worship leader friend of mine listened to the whole album, and his text message to me was: “all things new” is crazy good. vocals are insane.

True that.  Peggy and Nancy also added some wonderful harmonies to the track.  Almost all band instruments have some type of part rather than chording something which made the arrangement interesting.  Verses one lead part throughout, we all take turns and you feel like people are sliding in and out of the mix to keep the track different at every turn.

For the reprise, I borrowed a classical guitar and attempted some Spanish flare.  I then got Leah to take the outro lead guitar melody and play it on flute as I played on guitar accompanied by a cajon.  She then came up with some incredible lines as it opens up.  She is so talented that I literally sang a crazy flute part, and then she repeated it back to me the second after I finished singing it.  I don’t know I get to work with such talented people!  When you listen to this track, crazy dancing normally just happens.
