The Light of the World

John 8:12-20 – In a world full of darkness, Jesus claimed to be the light that each of us needs. His illumination provides insight into who He is and clarity about where we should go.

Jesus’ Content

  • At the time of Jesus’ teaching on light, they were celebrating the illuminated Festival of Shelters (John 7:2, 10).
  • By claiming to be the light of the world, Jesus identified as the eternal radiance that humanity so desperately needs (8:12).
  • To follow Jesus implies that you are stepping out of the darkness (8:12).
  • Judging truth by human standards always incorporates varyingly dangerous filters (8:13-15).
  • Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, and by His works, the Father proved it to be true (8:16-18).
  • The most truthful thing Jesus could unashamedly say about Himself sounded exclusively intolerant (8:19-20).

Our Consideration

  • You don’t know God if you aren’t walking with Jesus.
  • If you’re living in darkness, it’s because you prefer it that way.
  • You can remain kind yet uncompromising if anyone’s opinion contradicts biblical truth.
  • Now is not the time to dim your light just because it hurts the eyes of those in darkness.
  • What your life and this world needs is the illumination Christ brings.
