What the First Marriage Reveals About Ours

To truly understand marriage, we must return to its origin in Genesis 1–3, where God first designed it and where sin first disrupted it. These foundational chapters reveal not only what went wrong but also the hope that began to set everything right.

Since God has revealed His wisdom through a written Word, we cannot afford to neglect it—especially when it comes to something as vital and complex as marriage. It would be foolish to ignore the only objective guide and instead turn to the ever-shifting, subjective opinions of society. Scripture is the unmatched source of God’s will, and we must go there to understand His design for marriage.

The Bible is a vast book filled with countless themes. A quick word search will reveal that “marriage” isn’t among the top ten most frequent topics—but what is said about it is absolutely sufficient. If we trust God’s Word as being enough to equip us for every good work (including marriage), we can reorient ourselves around His wisdom.

Addressing marriage biblically isn’t as simple as turning to one chapter. While certain passages focus clearly on marriage, the truths are spread throughout the pages. So, where should we begin? I suggest starting where everything else begins—Genesis 1–3.

These opening chapters are foundational not only for marriage but for all theology. In them, we discover God’s power, purpose, and presence. We learn that God’s original design was for His people to dwell in His presence in His place—and that He won’t stop until that becomes a reality again. We see how God instituted marriage and defined roles, relationships, and responsibilities. And tragically, we see how sin entered the world and fractured that unity.

Shame, blame, and separation entered—yet so did hope. A rescue was promised, a war was declared, and a Redeemer was foretold.

If you understand Genesis 1–3, you’ll better understand the rest of the Bible—and your marriage’s place within it. So read slowly. Meditate deeply. And let the beginning shape everything that follows.
