Why You Should Preach Through Galatians

July 8, 2025

For the last five months, I’ve had the privilege of walking through the book of Galatians with our church family—and we’re almost to the finish line. While we’re not quite done yet, I can already say this has been one of the most needed and shaping sermon series I’ve ever preached.

Galatians is a letter that doesn’t waste words. It dives straight into the heart of the gospel and confronts the lies we’re all tempted to believe—that salvation depends on what we do instead of what Christ has done. In a world obsessed with performance, Galatians boldly re-centers us on grace. It fights hard against works-based salvation and reminds us: Jesus is enough.

But preaching through Galatians comes with its own set of challenges. Early in the letter, Paul essentially says the same thing—over and over—but in different ways. He’s laser-focused on defending the true gospel from every possible angle. And as a preacher, the task is to keep that central message clear yet varied, to help your people hear the same truth with fresh ears each week. It stretches your creativity and deepens your own grasp of grace in the process.

Beyond gospel clarity, Galatians highlights the vital role of the Holy Spirit. It challenges us not just to avoid sin but to walk by the Spirit. It names the works of the flesh, but also showcases the fruit the Spirit produces in us when we surrender to His leading.

And it doesn’t stay abstract. Galatians gives concrete, practical examples of how to live out our faith—how to confront sin, how to restore one another, how to carry burdens, and how to avoid pride. It gives theology with traction.

In many ways, Galatians is a hard book to preach—but it’s exactly what today’s churches need. We’re constantly tempted to earn what Jesus has already given. We drift toward legalism or license, and Galatians pulls us back to the narrow road of grace and truth.

If you’re a pastor or teacher considering preaching this book, I can’t recommend it enough. And if it helps, I’ve made our series outline available here:

Feel free to use it, adapt it, or improve it. My prayer is that it will help others proclaim the same gospel Paul so passionately defended.

We’re not quite finished yet—but Galatians has been worth every week. I pray its truth continues to shape our church long after the series ends.
