Discipleship in Four Steps

August 5, 2025

Jesus trained His disciples through a clear four-step progression—moving them from watchers to doers. This same model invites us to grow in discipleship and guide others with the same intentional approach.

Jesus spent three years training His disciples, but we only see a glimpse of what He taught and did with them. According to John 21:25, if everything were written down, the world couldn’t contain the books. Still, from what we do see, a clear pattern emerges: Jesus gradually gave His disciples more responsibility as they matured in their faith and understanding.

One helpful model summarizes His approach in four simple stages:

  1. I do it, and you watch – Luke 6:12–19
Jesus sets the example. The disciples observe how He ministers to people.
  2. I do it, and you help – Luke 9:10–17
Jesus leads, but now the disciples are participating—passing out food during a miracle.
  3. You do it, and I help – Luke 9:37–43
The disciples begin taking the lead in ministry, and Jesus supports and corrects them when needed.
  4. You do it, and I watch – Luke 10:1–12, 17–20
Jesus sends them out. They minister independently and return to Him with stories of God’s power at work.

This progression isn’t just for biblical times—it’s a pattern for us today. Have you ever had someone disciple you this way? Have you ever invested in someone else like this?

Discipleship isn’t instant; it’s a process. Pray today for an opportunity to start this intentional model—whether you’re the one learning or the one leading. Jesus’ method still works.
