A friend recently admitted to me, “I never really took the Bible seriously. I didn’t read it on my own, and I regret a lot of the traits and choices from earlier stages in my life.”
But then he told me something remarkable. It all changed when he volunteered to help during Vacation Bible School. As he listened to them answer Bible questions with confidence and clarity, he was stunned. These children, still so young, knew God’s Word better than he did. Their simple faith and knowledge of Scripture put him to shame—but also stirred something within him.
He told me, “The pastor’s young kids knew the Bible better than me, and something had to change!”
That moment became a turning point. Since then, he has read through the entire Bible, and now he carries it with him daily. What once collected dust has become the book that guides his steps. What once felt like a burden has become his greatest treasure.
I love this story because it reminds me of two powerful truths.
First, the Bible transforms lives. Scripture describes itself as “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). It convicts us, shapes us, and points us to Christ. The psalmist declared, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). My friend experienced that light breaking through years of neglect, regret, and darkness.
Second, never underestimate the witness of a child. Paul reminded Timothy, “From childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15). When parents intentionally sow God’s Word into their children, that faith not only anchors them—it inspires others. My kids never knew that their eagerness to learn Scripture would lead a grown man to change his life. But that’s how God works. One small seed planted can ripple out in ways we’d never expect.
Maybe you’ve been where my friend once was—regretting wasted years without Scripture as your foundation. Or maybe you’ve been faithfully pouring God’s Word into your children, wondering if it matters. His story proves both truths: it’s never too late to start, and it’s always worth it to invest early.
So open your Bible today. Read it. Meditate on it. Live by it. You never know whose life might be changed—starting with your own.
