“A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise person holds it back.” — Proverbs 29:11
Leadership provides plenty of opportunities to react.
- An unexpected email.
- A harsh criticism.
- A disappointing conversation.
- A volunteer who doesn’t follow through.
- A schedule that falls apart.
Ministry has a way of exposing whatever is happening beneath the surface.
Proverbs does not teach us to suppress our emotions. It teaches us to steward them. The fool gives full expression to every frustration, while the wise person exercises self-control. Wisdom is not the absence of emotion. It is the ability to respond rather than react.
People are watching more than what we say. They are watching how we handle pressure.
A leader who panics spreads panic. A leader who lashes out creates fear. A leader who complains fuels negativity. On the other hand, a steady leader brings calm to chaotic situations because people know they can be trusted when circumstances become difficult.
Jesus demonstrated this perfectly. Whether surrounded by demanding crowds, confronted by hostile religious leaders, or facing the agony of the cross, He was never ruled by His emotions. His compassion was genuine, His anger was righteous, His sorrow was real, yet every response remained under the control of the Father.
Emotional maturity is developed long before difficult moments arrive. It grows through daily time with the Lord, consistent prayer, humble accountability, and learning to pause before speaking. When our hearts are anchored in Christ, our responses become less controlled by circumstances and more controlled by the Spirit.
Strong leadership is not loud leadership. It is steady leadership.
People are drawn to leaders whose emotions are governed by wisdom rather than circumstance. In ministry, one calm response often accomplishes far more than an emotional reaction ever could.
