“The one who gives an answer before he listens, this is foolishness and disgrace for him.” — Proverbs 18:13
Most people would agree that listening is important. Far fewer actually practice it. Too often, we listen just long enough to formulate our response instead of genuinely understanding the person in front of us. Before they finish their sentence, we’ve already diagnosed the problem, prepared our advice, or decided why they’re wrong.
Proverbs calls this foolishness.
In ministry, the ability to listen well is one of the most underrated leadership skills. People do not simply want answers. They want to know they have been heard. Whether counseling a hurting member, meeting with a volunteer, resolving conflict between staff members, or welcoming a first-time guest, careful listening communicates value long before we ever speak.
Listening also keeps us from making unnecessary mistakes. Assumptions have damaged countless relationships. A rushed response can create problems that would have been avoided with one more question or a few more minutes of patient attention.
Jesus consistently modeled this kind of listening. Although He knew people’s hearts, He often asked questions before giving instruction. He invited people to express their fears, struggles, and desires. His questions were not for His benefit, but for theirs. He demonstrated that listening is an expression of love.
For ministry leaders, listening requires humility. It acknowledges that we do not know every detail and that others may see something we have missed. It slows us down enough to understand before trying to solve.
One of the simplest ways to improve as a leader is to become a better listener.
- Ask thoughtful questions.
- Resist the urge to interrupt.
- Clarify before you conclude.
- Seek understanding before offering solutions.
People may not remember every word you say, but they will remember how well you listened.
