In this week’s Christology study, we are focusing on Jesus’ dedication to the will of God. Shown throughout his entire time on earth, it is visible very clearly at the Garden of Gethsemene. Leaving the Last Supper, Jesus brought along the inner 3 to one of his favorite places to pray.
Here are some things to note from this section:
- While Jesus was fully God, he was fully man. Stressed to the point of hematidrosis, his blood vessels burst and blood entered into his pores and came out as he sweat. A group of fishermen would have seemed crazy to say, “Jesus was looking like he was sweating blood,” but they said it anyway not aware it was a medical condition.
- Jesus was not dreading the Romans, Pharisees, torture, execution, or the Devil. He was grappling with the fact of absorbing the entirety of God’s wrath for every person of all time on him.
- He showed us in prayer that it is OK to ask for what you want. It is acceptable to desire a different outcome, but always present your requests with “not my will, but yours be done.”
Jesus was faithful to the end. It wasn’t about his desires. He didn’t care for his comfort. He desired obedience. We could learn much from his dedication.
