God is the only consistent being in the universe. Everyone else and everything else is hopelessly inconsistent. You never know what you get with us, you always can trust in what you get with God. His character never wavers.
While God’s words are true, his promises can be trusted, and his willingness to help us in temptation is guaranteed, he is also faithful in his consistent character.
We are desperately in need of the faithfulness of God due to the unfaithfulness of us.
Paul told Timothy, “If we are faithless, he remains faithful – for he cannot deny himself” (2 Tim. 2:13). His character will not allow unfaithfulness on his part! The attribute of God’s faithfulness is paramount to our unfaithful survival.
Our great hope is in the consistent faithfulness of God. His wondrous steadfast nature causes our mouths to sing of his faithfulness and to declare it to all generations (Ps. 89:1). As we gather as his people, we look upward to the heavens which scream his faithfulness (Ps. 89:5). Faithfulness literally surrounds everything he does (Ps. 89:8). How could such a faithful God endure such unfaithful people? Because he gives us his faithfulness and mercy (Ps. 89:24)!
Our part is to confess our unfaithful nature resulting in sin, and he promises to be faithful and just to forgive us our sins and even to cleanse us from all of our unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). How can we be guaranteed of such incredible promises? “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it” (1 Thess. 5:24). Because we are faithless, we need mercy that can only be found in the faithfulness of the LORD. “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lam. 3:22-23).
