Some of the most gifted people I have known in ministry never reached their full potential because they could not control their tongues.
They could preach powerful sermons, lead teams effectively, organize ministries, and cast compelling vision. They had knowledge, talent, and opportunity. From the outside, it seemed like they had everything necessary to make a significant impact for the Kingdom. Yet over time, something kept holding them back.
It was not a lack of ability.
It was a lack of restraint.
Careless words damaged relationships. Unnecessary criticism created tension. Gossip weakened trust. Harsh responses left wounds. What years of hard work had built, a few reckless conversations often tore down.
Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that “death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Those words are not an exaggeration. Our words have consequences. They shape how people view us, how relationships develop, and how ministries function. A well-timed word of encouragement can strengthen someone for years. A careless comment can discourage them just as long.
One of the clearest indicators of character is how a person speaks. Anyone can sound wise when circumstances are favorable and emotions are calm. The real test comes when we are frustrated, disappointed, criticized, or under pressure. In those moments, what comes out of our mouths often reveals what is happening in our hearts.
This is especially important for those who lead. Influence is built on trust, and trust is often won or lost through everyday conversations. People do not simply evaluate our competence. They evaluate our character. They want to know whether our words are dependable, gracious, and truthful.
I have watched talented people lose opportunities not because they lacked skill, but because others could not trust what they might say next. Their abilities opened doors, but their speech eventually closed them. Talent can create opportunities, but character sustains them.
Before speaking, it is worth asking a few simple questions.
- Is what I am about to say true?
- Is it necessary?
- Is it helpful?
- Will it build someone up or tear them down?
- Will it strengthen trust or weaken it?
None of us will use our words perfectly, but all of us can grow in this area. The Holy Spirit does not simply transform our actions. He transforms our speech as well. As our hearts become more like Christ, our words should increasingly reflect His grace, truth, and wisdom.
Guard your words carefully. Your influence depends on it.
