The Source of Temptation

I love Jesus and his Word!  He is using his Word to grow us up in Christ. We focused on “The Source of Temptation.” James 1:15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming …

What to Do About Personality-Driven Churches

Fact: personality-driven churches exist. Whether you like it or not, we cannot escape it.  While I have tried to deny its reality, it is inescapable.  With every passing tweet, book, podcast, and social share, each of us can become more and more known by the personality of our leader or the DNA of our specific church rather than the person of …

All Is Vanity

[This sermon is in a series of messages I make for a collegiate athletic team while they travel on the road.  Coaches make this time optional on Sunday mornings from a hotel room.] The sermon is from Ecclesiastes 2: 2 I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity. 2 I said of laughter, “It is …

Financial Temptations

Services started out with baptisms this morning!  So wonderful watching these folks getting baptized and being reminded of how God is transforming lives around here! We sang “Doxology” with a little instrumental intro.  After that, we introduced a new song from “The Word” project entitled “Amazed.”  The song focuses on the ministry of Jesus and people’s reaction to him.  I …

“The Word” Song Listing

“The Word” is getting closer by the day. As we attempt to tell the grand narrative of the Bible, we set out to compose songs that communicate those truths and worship Jesus at every stop. Our team has never studied more, prayed more, and analyzed more.  We have spent an untold number of hours nitpicking lyrics because of our commitment to …

Godly Wisdom

Today we focused on the need and the acquirement of godly wisdom. I love being a part of this church. We began by singing “My Tribute” by the late Andre Crouch and went straight into “How Great Thou Art.”  We sang “Your Word” again this Sunday.  It was great watching people connect with the truths of this song. We then …

We are making finishing touches on “The Word” songs for our big event in April.  These are a special collection of songs as we walk through the grand narrative of the Bible. Please keep the prayers coming! Yesterday, we shared a new song from the upcoming project.  This one is entitled “Your Word.” It was somewhat simple to begin songwriting …

Kendrick Brothers Movie #5 (And Some New Curriculum)

After preaching Sunday morning, teaching on cults Sunday evening, I went home to get a few hours of sleep.  My alarm woke me up at 3:45 AM Monday morning so I could get to the airport to make it to an early meeting in Nashville.  While the conditions were tiresome, I was eager and humbled at the opportunity. I am …

Undignified Worship

I love focusing on worship with worshipers. We started our services out by reading 1 Peter 2:4-10.  We then sang “All to Us” and “Burning in My Soul.”  It was great to see the focus early on in the services. After some announcements during offertory, we sang “10,000 Reasons.”  I got up before the message to read parts of Psalm 103 …

Rhythms of Grace: How the Church’s Worship Tells the Story of the Gospel

This book by Mike Cosper is challenging me to the core.  As a worshiper and a worship pastor, this read is essential. Some great quotes from the book: “Celebrity pastors and worship leaders are everywhere, leading services that seem more about spectacle than substance” (17). “The boiling, fiery, deadly presence of God is the natural reaction of holiness in the …

XI Commandment

I know you thought there were 10 Commandments, but apparently, that is not the case.  Take example, this edition of church signs: The XI Commandment: NO Church Parking Beyond This Sign -Moses Just in case you were wondering, there are actually 613 Commandments recorded in the Old Testament. I’m pretty sure that the text above is not one of them, but …

The Danger of Worldliness

I tend to look at the shape of our world and the morals of people who aren’t following Jesus and think that I am a pretty good guy.  I look around at how blatantly sinful other people are, and my “respectable” and “quiet” sins don’t seem as severe, and gradually I just get complacent. I look at other people’s standard …

The Word [100 Day Chronological Bible Reading Plan]

I searched for a chronological plan that would highlight key passages, and while there are many good ones out there, I chose to develop our own at North Side.  While I think it is best to read the entirety of God’s Word, this plan is a good introductory plan for some of you or a good reminder of what you …

Think Projects – Not Tasks

What I find is that it is very difficult for me to get into a creative and productive rhythm when I jump from role to role and task to task. I find when I do the same task over and over, I get faster and more effective as the time goes. And that is why I choose to think projects instead of tasks.

Don’t Evaluate What You Do – Evaluate How You Do It

When I look at my work week, so much of how I do things came from time spent evaluating how I have done things. I have found so many wiser ways of doing things and that process has allowed me to be a part of more Kingdom-focused projects as a result. Don’t evaluate what you do. Evaluate how you do it.

Be the Protest

I was sitting in a hotel room with my family when the verdict was announced.  I had the TV quiet enough not to wake the children as I read the subtitles over the paired videos of President Obama calling for peace on one side and watching Ferguson completely unravel on the other side. As tears filled my eyes, I longed for heaven. …
